When a vehicle is sold, its ownership must be transferred from the seller to the buyer. - Death of the Owner:
If the registered owner passes away, ownership can be transferred to a legal heir. - Public Auction Purchase:
After purchasing a vehicle in a public auction, the buyer must transfer the ownership into their name.
RC Transfer Process
The RC transfer process may differ depending on whether the buyer and seller are in the same state or different states.
RC Transfer Within the Same State
- The application for ownership transfer can be submitted to the RTO where the vehicle is registered or where the buyer resides.
- If the vehicle has an active loan, the Hypothecation (HP) termination must be completed at the parent RTO before submitting the ownership transfer application.
Inter-State Vehicle Ownership Transfer
If you’re purchasing a vehicle registered in another state, follow these steps:
- Obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the seller’s state for the vehicle transfer.
- Re-register the vehicle in your state and pay the applicable road tax.
